MINUTES OF THE TOWN COUNCIL REMEMBRANCE DAY WORKING GROUP MEETING HELD ON THE 4 DECEMBER 2006


1. PRESENT. Councillor M. Way in the Chair, Cllrs B Pickering the Town Mayor, J B Jonas the Deputy Town Mayor, T Robson and Messrs Rev J E Linton, T Gillanders and K W Dodd.
2. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE were given on behalf of Cllrs N Wicks, Mrs I C Whale and Messrs. P Clark and G Robinson.
3. MINUTES. It was AGREED to receive the minutes of the Remembrance Day Working Group meeting held on the 4 September 2006, presented to Council on 6 November 2006.
4. MATTERS ARISING - There were no matters arising.
5. 2006 EVENT. It was AGREED by everyone present that the event had been very successful. The following headings were noted and the Council is asked to agree the recommendations.
a. PA system. Two additional speakers are needed and two lapel style microphones should be obtained.
b. There is a need to clear the pathway at the fusilier gate for the honour guard when it arrives.
c. The public congregating at the fusilier gateway need to be moved to permit access and firm orders must be given by the Marshals to ensure this access is cleared.
d. The period from when the Band arrives and the bells start to peal is to be extended and the Band asked to commence playing ASAP on arrival.
e. The Band needs to continue a drum beat while the Parade marches to its halt at the Memorial.
f. The positioning of any road closed signs in the Market Place need to be checked on the day to avoid confusion with the Parade.
g. The power supply for the PA to be taken from the Fusilier Gate point and Cllr T Robson is to be consulted on this work. Tynedale Council to be asked to permit HTC staff laying a cable to a permanent point near the Memorial.
h. The printed programme must be lengthened so there are no blank pages.
6. REMEMBRANCE Day 2007. It will be the 25 Anniversary of the Falklands War and it was AGREED this be the theme for the event.
7. 3rd RECCE. Regt. OCA. The veterans in the OCA are so old that they can no longer be sure they will attend the event. They wish their Regimental Banner to be paraded in the March Past and it was AGREED this will be carried out by the Council. The OCA also wishes to have their Banner stored permanently and it was also AGREED the Council should be responsible. The Banner could be stored in the Cemetery Chapel with an explanatory plaque detailing why it is there and its history. Cllr M Way AGREED to discuss this matter further with the OCA and will report to full Council with his recommendations in due course.
8. It was AGREED the next meeting would be on 25 June 2007 at 2.30pm.
