MINUTES OF THE TOWN COUNCIL REMEMBRANCE DAY WORKING GROUP MEETING HELD ON THE 4 SEPTEMBER 2006

 

117.PRESENT. Councillor M. Way in the Chair, Cllrs B Pickering the Town Mayor, J B Jonas the Deputy Town Mayor and Messrs Rev J E Linton, A Ash, T Gillanders and P Clark.

118.APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE were given on behalf of Cllrs N Wicks, T Robson, Mrs I C Whale and Messrs. S Batey, K W Dodd and G Robinson.

119.HENRY SMITH DECEASED. The Chairman spoke of the recent death of Henry and the contribution he had made to the Remembrance Day ceremony in 1999 and to his distinguished war record when he had been captured by the Japanese and a prisoner of war on the Burma railway where he served as a medical orderly in the most atrocious conditions. He was a hero of Hexham.

120.MINUTES. It was AGREED to receive the minutes of the Remembrance Day Working Group meeting held on the 8 May 2006, presented to Council on 5 June 2006.

121.MATTERS ARISING - There were no matters arising.

122.2006 EVENT. The following details were considered and AGREED.

a.       Cllr M Way had arranged for veterans of the three Services though the Army representative was not yet finalised.

b.       The Clerk had met the BSM of 39 Regiment and he had confirmed they will be attending. The Battery marching will be as last year but the numbers attending the Service in the Park and Abbey will be reduced due to overseas commitments.

c.       Cllr M Way and Cllr T Robson had met with Police Inspector Kevin Oates in June to discuss Parade arrangements. An application to close the highways had been sent to Tynedale Council.

d.       Saturday Poppy laying ceremony. It was AGREED to ask the ACF and ATC to attend this ceremony ‘on Parade’. It was also AGREED advertising of this event as well as Remembrance Day should be made in the Courant.

123.Veterans Day 2007. After consideration it was AGREED to take no further action on this subject.

124.It was AGREED the next meeting would be on 4 December 2006 at 2.30pm.
